Love Notes from God
“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?”
When my children were little, I used to sing songs to them every night at bedtime. One of my very favorites was always a simple song that I grew up hearing my mom sing to me, “My Heavenly Father Loves Me.” It speaks of appreciating the sights, sounds, scents, and textures in the world around us and the wonder of our own lives and bodies. In effect, it reminds me that all these marvels are gifts from God because He loves me.
Today I spent nearly four hours cooking special dishes from scratch for my daughter’s birthday dinner. It was a tiring afternoon. But when I went to pull out the potatoes from the sack, I found an amazing little heart-shaped potato. It reminded me instantly of the heart-shaped pumpkins my daughter spotted at a charming family farm where we selected our carving pumpkins a few weeks ago.
Seeing these hearts in nature is like finding little love notes from my Heavenly Parents throughout my day, kind of like the ones I tuck into my children’s duffel bags when they go away to overnight camp.
If I, as an imperfect but loving parent, would feel such a deep instinct to go to that effort when my kids are away for a mere couple of days, how much more must our perfect, loving Heavenly Parents feel a desire to go to the same effort of reminding us of their love during the years we are away from their presence? Some may say a heart-shaped vegetable is merely a happy accident. Maybe so. But it feels completely right to me that Heavenly Parents would want to fill the world with beautiful little treasures to brighten our days and gladden our hearts.
I believe the gifts are there, if we only have eyes to see and ears to hear them.
Have you noticed any love notes from God lately?
